By Football Italian staff After being thrashed by Fiorentina in the Champions League quarter-final, Florence remain unbeaten in all competitions and have a game in hand over their rivals.
Alessandro Gazzi and Andrea Bertolacci were on target in the 1-1 draw at Stadio Olimpico, but the game came to a premature end when the Italian side’s captain, Giuseppe Gazzo, was taken off the field in the 74th minute with a calf injury.
It was not the first time the Italy international has been forced off the pitch, and a knee injury suffered in training against AC Milan last week has kept him out of action.
Gazzo was replaced by Giampiero Gabbiadini in the 63rd minute but was not given a chance to score.
He will now have to wait until Wednesday morning for a second opinion on his calf injury before deciding whether to continue with the squad.
A second consecutive home defeat means the Bianconeri will be without the likes of Giampietro Bonazzi, Federico Conti, Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Barzagli.
The only bright spot for the Biancocelesti was their impressive start to the game.
Defender Mario Balotelli was in superb form, playing the full 90 minutes with four shots on target.
Balotelli scored his first league goal in the 2-1 win over Juventus on Monday.
His goal came just before half-time and the hosts dominated the first half and were able to extend their lead.
The second half was much the same, and Milan were in control of proceedings.
Mario Balotoli had a shot deflected in off the post by Alessandro Nesta in the 64th minute, but Simone Pepe did well to tip it over the bar from close range in the 86th minute.
Federico Conto, who was sent off for a late challenge on Francesco Mancini, came off the bench to provide a spark for the visitors.
But Fiorence could not find a winner for much of the first 45 minutes.
Fiorence started brightly but struggled to convert chances and was eventually denied a goal in stoppage time after Mancin was sent clear.
The Biancones are now on course to win the Serie A title, but their run of three consecutive victories has come to an end.
Fellow top-flight side Inter have only won once in their last nine Serie A matches.
